PLAYTIME AND LUNCHTIME PROVISION

The school offers a whole range of activities during playtimes and lunchtimes run by our Midday Supervisor Team.

If the weather is fit for the children to be outside (and they will be outside if at all possible, whilst safe to do so, to enjoy the positive benefits of free play, fresh air and exercise) they can choose from a range of activities which run on the playground and/or field. These activities may vary at different times but they are varied, to be inclusive for all children, The activities could comprise:

  • Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Cricket
  • Parachute games,
  • Giant snakes and ladders
  • Jenga
  • Reading comics
  • Bubbles
  • Exploring the nature trail
  • Using the sensory equipment
  • Races
  • Rounders
  • Tag rugby
  • Football
  • Using the adventure/trim trail
  • Playing in the willow tunnels
  • Free play

If the children are on the playground, there are plenty of activities available to them including:

  • Role play
  • Football
  • Stilts
  • Skipping
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Team games
  • Lego
  • Equipment activities such as ball games, sensory games, hoops, giant snakes and ladders and chalks.

In wet weather, the children remain in their classroom where there are a variety of activities including board games, colouring, reading, Lego, chess etc from which the children choose.

Playtimes and lunchtimes are managed by our Play Provision Leaders. The Leaders are out at all times to maintain and inspire the highest provision of activities, as well having the health, safety and wellbeing of the children as a priority.  The Leaders also actively manage any concerns brought to them by the children.

Our sports provision at lunch is led by our very own Sports Co-Ordinator, Mr Craig Keenan, who also encourages and supports children wanting to join the school teams.  He often runs trials and training for various sports teams during the lunch break.

In KS2 the older children in the school are encouraged to help the younger children by becoming a Playground Buddy.  The Y4 children operate a playground buddy scheme in the playgrounds at lunchtime for the FS children.  Their role is to support younger children under the close supervision of staff members. They create games and ensure all children have someone to play with and are happy. The buddies who join the scheme become a part of the Midday Supervisor Team working with adults and children alike. This an exciting and rewarding opportunity.

In addition we have the following staff groups available during playtimes and lunchtimes to assist as necessary:

  • Social Integration Coaches (SICs) - many of our Teaching Assistants (TAs) also work as SICs at playtimes and lunchtimes.  Their role involves supporting positive play and relationships in a variety of ways and extends to 1:1 support of children who find it particularly difficult to mix well with other children in the playground.  They will adapt game play to accommodate the integration of these children within the group.
  • Pastoral Team – this is readily available over playtimes and lunchtimes for any children who may feel overwhelmed by the free choice and activities on offer or who require some specialised additional help, often on a 1:1 basis.  Our Pastoral Team members are highly trained, particularly with regard to the emotional aspects of children’s lives.
